NOW CLOSED UPDATE TO FOLLOW SOON
Thanks to a tip from Scott “Gimme” Muir I visited newly opened Papa Doms last weekend with hopes of something very special and I wasn’t to be disappointed.
En route to Papa’s I realised that Ayr races had been on that afternoon and the contents of the racetrack were being poured into waiting taxis and mini buses as we passed. Normally I would avoid Ayr on the evening of a race day especially if eating out however my concerns went unfounded. What struck me on entry was the warmth of the welcome which immediately put me at ease and we were shown to our table. Papa’s is so new the only menu is on a piece of double sided A4 paper however believe me its what’s on the paper that matters.I think head honcho Sanj is still in the process of tweaking the fabulous Tapas style menu and I get the feeling he is a guy that likes what goes on your plate to be perfect having witnessed the passion he exudes when talking about his food.
What was apparent when you looked round the other diners was how focussed they were on the food and how much they were enjoying every mouthful. From the varied inventive menu we settled for a selection of six tapas dishes any of which would have a curry monster beg on his knees for second helpings.
The restaurant itself is modern, uncluttered and the finish throughout is of a high standard which includes the immaculately clean washrooms.
I think this is owner Sanj’s first venture however his competition locally will have to up their game significantly if they hope to compete with the new kid on the block.(I have it on good authority that two of the local competitions head chefs have already dined there so something’s cooking as they say)…….Good luck Sanj!
Note it’s currently unlicensed but there’s no corkage charge for any alcohol you bring in.
Scores a whopping 9.5 and I will be back sooner than later……welcome to my top 5!!……..STOP PRESS Papa Doms is now licensed however they will continue to allow BYOB for the near future. I’m also told that long term you will be able to bring your own wines for a sensible corkage charge!
How good is that!……….see the top five restaurants at OTG
Stop Stop Press…………..so nice to see Tam the pie man get it rightish in the daily record last Saturday 27 out of 30 however I thing there must have been tactical scoring for Pappadoms on the basis “we must have a mix of cultures that win the hotplate so the Italians are in pole position as we had blah blah..etc”…………. as for 4 the toilets!!…………should have gone to specsavers..they are immaculate. Pappas is worth at least a 29.
